DRAFT - Original or Compatible?!? What is the difference ?!?

OEM or Compatible?!?

Jaspertronics offers up to four projector lamp options. They fit the same model, but they may differ in who designed the light source, their expected performance and lifespan, their warranty, and their price.

Our first recommendation

Jaspertronics™ OEM Lamp: Best Overall for Our Customers

For the strongest combination of original-specification performance, expected lifespan, availability, direct technical support, warranty coverage, and price, choose the Jaspertronics™ OEM Lamp whenever it is offered for your model.

It is a Jaspertronics-designed replacement engineered to meet or exceed the original lamp application's critical specifications where stated on the product page. It is not represented as a Philips, OSRAM, Ushio, or other branded OEM lamp unless that manufacturer is specifically identified in the listing.

OEM-level targetDesigned around the original application specifications.

A suitable generic or aftermarket projector bulb and housing for customers whose main priority is the lowest initial cost.

4 · Projector-brand box

Genuine Projector-Brand Retail-Packaged Lamp

The official service part supplied in packaging branded by the projector manufacturer. The projector brand often contracts a specialist lighting company to make the light source.

  • Official projector-brand part number and box
  • Most limited availability
  • Usually the most expensive option by far
  • Typically no practical performance gain

Best for: Procurement rules or customers who require the exact projector-brand retail package.

Light-source identity Jaspertronics-designed; any third-party OEM is named only when verified. Philips/Signify, OSRAM, Phoenix, Ushio, Panasonic/Matsushita, Iwasaki/EYE, or another named OEM. Aftermarket manufacturer; normally not one of the original lighting OEMs. May use one of the same specialist OEM light sources; supplier varies by part.

Suitable basic operation, generally with lesser overall performance. Usually similar to the correct genuine OEM or Jaspertronics OEM option, with little or no visible gain.

Generally shorter than Jaspertronics OEM and Genuine OEM Lamp Inside. Normally follows the official service-part specification; not automatically longer-lived.

Who Made the Bulb, Housing, and Box?

Projector lamp terminology becomes easier when the light source, lamp module, and retail packaging are treated as three separate parts of the supply chain.

1. Light source or arc lamp

This is the component that produces the light. It may be made by a specialist OEM such as Philips/Signify, OSRAM, Phoenix, Ushio, Panasonic/Matsushita, or Iwasaki/EYE, by Jaspertronics' manufacturing partner, or by an aftermarket supplier.

2. Reflector, housing, and connector

These parts position the lamp correctly, manage heat, connect it to the projector, and form the complete replacement lamp module. The product page should state whether the housing is original or replacement.

3. Brand and packaging

A projector-brand cardboard box identifies the official service-part channel. It does not, by itself, prove that the projector company physically manufactured the internal light source. Most 'branded' projector lamps are simply the same as OEM and come with a nicely printed, and expensive, cardboard box!

2. Genuine OEM Lamp Inside

A Genuine OEM Lamp Inside contains a verified light source made by an established projection-lighting manufacturer. The bulb or arc lamp is installed in the original or replacement housing described in the product listing.

  • Philips / Signify
  • OSRAM
  • Phoenix
  • Ushio
  • Panasonic / Matsushita
  • Iwasaki / EYE

This is an excellent option for customers who specifically want an original specialist-manufacturer lamp. It can deliver the original lamp-manufacturer benchmark without the large markup associated with projector-brand retail packaging.

Availability is the main limitation. Many older lamp designs are discontinued, so genuine OEM choices can be restricted to remaining new-old stock or an approved successor lamp.

3. Advanced Lamps™ Compatible Lamp

An Advanced Lamps™ Compatible Lamp is a generic or aftermarket replacement projector lamp with housing. It is designed to fit and operate in the models listed on the product page while keeping the initial replacement cost as low as possible.

This category is a suitable budget choice, but it is not positioned as identical to OEM. Customers should generally expect slightly lower overall light performance and a slightly shorter service-life target.

  • Lowest initial purchase price
  • Suitable replacement for basic projector operation
  • Useful for older, secondary, or occasionally used equipment
  • Generally lower performance and shorter lifespan than the first two options

4. Genuine Projector-Brand Retail-Packaged Lamp

A Genuine Projector-Brand Retail-Packaged Lamp is the official replacement service part sold under the projector manufacturer's name and part number, normally in a cardboard box designed and branded by that projector company.

The branded package does not necessarily mean the projector manufacturer made the internal light source. Projector brands commonly specify and purchase lighting from specialist manufacturers, then package and distribute the completed service part under their own brand.

This is Jaspertronics' most limited and least available category. It is also usually the most expensive option by a wide margin, while offering no practical brightness, picture-quality, or lifespan advantage over the correct OEM option.

  • Official projector-brand box and service-part number
  • Useful when institutional purchasing rules require the branded part
  • Least available category, especially for discontinued projectors
  • Typically the highest price for minimal to no practical gain

Panasonic, Matsushita, and Epson labeling: Matsushita is Panasonic's former corporate name. Verified Panasonic- or Matsushita-made projection lamps are OEM. Genuine Epson service lamps may carry Epson branding, but the Epson name alone does not identify Epson as who physically manufactured the internal arc tube; that should be verified by individual part number.

Which Replacement Projector Bulb Should You Buy?

Choose Jaspertronics™ OEM

For the best performance, expected life, support, warranty, availability, and value. This is our recommendation.

Choose Advanced Lamps™ Compatible

When the lowest initial price matters more than maximum brightness retention, service life, or warranty coverage.

Choose a projector-brand retail-packaged lamp only when you specifically require the official branded service part or your organization's purchasing policy demands it.

Projector Lamp FAQs

These answers cover common searches about original projector lamps, OEM projector bulbs, compatible lamps, lamp housings, warranties, and branded replacement modules.

What is the best replacement projector lamp?

For our customers, Jaspertronics recommends the Jaspertronics™ OEM Lamp. It offers the strongest combination of original-specification performance, expected lifespan, availability, direct technical support, warranty coverage, and value. Always confirm the exact product specifications and warranty for your projector model.

What does “Genuine OEM Lamp Inside” mean?

It means the light-producing lamp is verified as coming from a named original projection-lighting manufacturer, such as Philips/Signify, OSRAM, Phoenix, Ushio, Panasonic/Matsushita, or Iwasaki/EYE. The housing and packaging are identified separately in the product listing.

Is Jaspertronics OEM the same as a Philips or OSRAM lamp?

No, not unless the product page specifically names Philips, OSRAM, or another original lighting manufacturer. A Jaspertronics OEM Lamp is Jaspertronics-designed and engineered for the original application. The distinction is stated clearly in the product title so customers know who supplied the light source.

Is a projector-brand retail-packaged lamp better?

Usually not in a way that is visible on screen. The official branded service part may use the same type of specialist-OEM light source available through another supply channel. Retail-packaged lamps are valuable when the exact branded part number and box are required, but they are typically the least available and most expensive choice, with no practical performance gain.

What is the difference between an OEM and compatible projector lamp?

An OEM lamp uses an original-manufacturer light source or is engineered to the original application's specifications. A compatible lamp is a generic or aftermarket substitute designed for fit and basic function. Compatible lamps cost less, but they generally provide lower performance, weaker brightness retention, and a shorter expected lifespan. However, we continue to test and ensure our compatible lamp series produces a hard to critisize result!

Who manufactures original projector bulbs?

Major specialist projection-lighting manufacturers include Philips/Signify, OSRAM, Phoenix, Ushio, Panasonic/Matsushita, and Iwasaki/EYE. The brand printed on the projector or retail box does not always identify the company that physically manufactured the light source.

Are Panasonic and Matsushita the same company?

Matsushita Electric Industrial was Panasonic's former corporate name. Older genuine projection lamps may therefore carry the Matsushita name. Matsushita is not the name of a separate Panasonic lighting division.

Does Epson manufacture its own projector bulbs?

Genuine Epson replacement modules may be branded or marked Epson. That branding confirms the Epson service-part channel, but it does not by itself establish who physically fabricated every internal arc tube. The underlying source should be identified only when it is verified for the specific lamp part number.

Does lamp lumen output equal projector ANSI lumens?

No. Bare-lamp output and the projector's measured on-screen light output are different specifications. Projector brightness is affected by the optical engine, lamp mode, calibration, screen, ventilation, dust, and the age and condition of the projector's components.

How do I find the correct replacement lamp?

Use the complete projector, projection TV, or lamp part number—not only the brand name. Search the model on Jaspertronics, or contact our team before ordering. We can help confirm compatibility, lamp type, housing, warranty, and the options available for your exact equipment.

Find the Correct Projector Lamp for Your Model

Enter the complete projector, projection TV, or lamp part number to compare the options available. When Jaspertronics OEM is offered, it is our recommended starting point for the best overall combination of performance, lifespan, support, warranty, availability, and value.
